The Manipuri workshop will be conducted by Sanjib Bhattacharya, recipient of the President’s Award from A.P.J Abdul Kalam in 2006 and Pratibha Patil in 2011. Sanjib is an accomplished Manipuri Dance Exponent, Guru and well-known choreographer of India and abroad. He received his training under the tutelage of Guru Bipin Singh, Padmashri Darshana Jhaveri, Kalavati Devi, Manjushree Chaki Sircar and Mamata Shankar.
Sanjib is currently an established performer of great repute having extensively performed across India and abroad. He is not only performing as a solo artist, but is also performing with eminent Gurus and Icons of Indian Classical dances like Padmavibhushan Sonal Mansingh, Padmashri Darshana Jhaveri, Padmashri Ranjana Gauhar Pratibha Prahlad, Vaijayanti Kashi, Gopika Vermer Sadanam Balakrishnan and other eminent gurus all over India and abroad. He runs several dance academies and schools in India while conducting Lecture Demonstrations and workshops regularly in India, United Kingdom, Poland, and the United States in Manipuri dance.
Having originated in the northeastern Indian state of Manipur, Manipuri themes are devotional and performed on religious occasions and in temples. Unlike many of the other classical Indian dances the dancers do not wear bells on their feet, rather the instruments are used by the dancers during their dance particularly, the kartal or manjira (cymbal) and the Manipuri mridang or pung (a cylindrical drum). The Ras Lila is the most important form of Manipuri dance and its themes revolves around the love of Krishna and the gopinis. The Pung Cholom is a very characteristic dance of Manipur as it is performed by both men and women as a prelude to the Ras Lila. In this style, the dancers play the pung at the same time they are dancing using aerobatics as an exciting effect, all without breaking the flow of the music. |
